The opposition deals a blow to Macron and postpones the debate on the vaccination passport

However, the debate will resume this Tuesday night, according to parliamentary sources.

On Monday, the lower house of the National Assembly was debating the establishment of a health passport consisting of a complete vaccination schedule to attend events, restaurants or travel on intercity trains, instead of the current pass, which includes the possibility of presenting a recent negative test at Covid-19 or have recently overcome the disease.

But when the government asked deputies to continue debating the bill beyond midnight, to make sure the law could be passed this week, the party The Republicans (LR, Conservative), along with the extreme right and radical left decided to suspend the debate.

The decision placed Macron’s party, La República en Marcha (LREM), in a delicate position: as it did not have all its deputies in the hemicycle during the vote, despite being a majority in Parliament, the opposition initiative went ahead and the debate was suspended.

French media pointed out that LR’s surprise decision, which has backed the bulk of the legislation, is an indication of growing political tension in France ahead of the presidential elections next April, for which Macron is emerging as the favorite.

The government spokesman, Gabriel Attal, pointed out that, with this maneuver, the opposition wanted to “ruin the timetable” for the implementation of the vaccination passport for purely political reasons.

“We will do everything possible to stick to the schedule set,” he told France Inter radio. The government wants the law to be approved by January 15.

The event exposed the weaknesses of LREM, a party that has failed to build a solid foundation since Macron’s meteoric rise to the presidency in 2017.
