The participants in the session that will elect the next head of state are the 630 deputies, the 321 senators (315 elected and six presidential appointments for life) and 58 delegates from the regions.
Nineteen of the 20 regions of the country will send three delegates, elected by the Regional Councils, while Valle de Aosta will send only one representative.
During the first three votes, a qualified majority of two thirds, 673 votes, is necessary to designate the president, while from the fourth vote onwards, a simple majority of 505 supports is sufficient.
In 2015, when voting began on January 29, Mattarella was elected on January 31, in the fourth ballot, with 665 votes from 1,009 participants.
According to Fico, there will be one vote per day and participants are obliged to wear a protection mask level FFp2.
At the moment, one of the main candidates is the current prime minister Mario Draghi, who at the end of the year did not rule out the possibility of becoming President if he achieves the same support with which the Government exercises, based on a large majority that contains almost the entire political arc with parliamentary representation, except for the right-wing Brothers from Italy.
However, the difficulty of finding another person who can exercise the Government with so much support and does not force the elections to be brought forward plays against the aspirations of the economist, who has been the premier since last February.
