“We have to fight the pandemic together”

Primary Jürgen Barth has one goal: Education about the corona vaccination. Too much false information is circulating, which is why vaccination morale is very low, especially in the Braunau district. Jürgen Barth has agreed to go to the communities and do fact checks on site with skeptics and, above all, insecure people. He was recently in Höhnhart. The vaccination rate is one of the lowest there, not even every second person is vaccinated. For two hours he answered questions from visitors to the information meeting and tried to explain the situation. He answered the mostly critical questions from the audience confidently and honestly. An excerpt:

If the Omikron vaccination is less effective, why should I get vaccinated?

Jürgen Barth: The vaccines also offer a very high level of protection against severe courses against Omikron. The likelihood of ending up in intensive care or suffering long-term damage is much lower with a full vaccination.

Mortality has not increased. Isn’t Corona just like the flu?

I have been working in the Braunau hospital for 31 years. Every year we had a more or less strong flu wave, the sick, like corona patients, had to be tested and housed in isolation. But it has never been the case that we have had to block stations. We always got by with the capacities. During the last two corona waves, up to 60 beds were occupied; of our twelve intensive care beds, nine were temporarily occupied by corona patients. There is an essential difference to the flu epidemic. Regarding mortality, I can say that in Austria we had up to 2000 flu deaths a year, with Corona it is three times as much in a comparable period, 6000 to 7000. The number of people infected is higher than those with flu in a flu epidemic. Around ten percent of those infected with corona end up in the hospital, around ten percent of these require intensive care, of which only around 40 percent survive.

I am young and healthy. Mostly old people die from Corona. Why should I get vaccinated?

In the first wave, the deceased were mostly older than 75 years. We were able to protect them with the vaccination, a new mutation appeared and mortality shifted. The average age is 60 to 65 years. The youngest patient we lost was 23 years old. Pre-existing illnesses play a role, of course, but people without a pre-existing illness also die.

In Portugal, the vaccination rate is very high. But the number of infections is increasing there too, they are no better off than us.

Infected, not hospitalized. That is the main difference. The vaccines protect against serious illnesses, not infections.

If the vaccines are so safe, why don’t the manufacturers take responsibility?

The state assumes liability, which is also common for almost all other vaccines.

Why don’t we just use natural selection instead of vaccination?

Our goal is to avoid deaths and long-term consequences. We have to fight the pandemic properly together so that it finally ends. And that is currently only possible if you get enough vaccinations.

I have recovered, I still have antibodies. I am protected, why should I get vaccinated?

A disease does not provide permanent protection. Antibodies do not provide solid information about the protection one has. Neutralizing antibodies have to be collected; only a handful of laboratories in Austria do that. We don’t know how many neutralizing antibodies it takes to be protected. People with high levels of antibodies also get sick. It is not only the neutralizing antibodies that are important, but also the activity of the immune cells (T cells). Unfortunately, you cannot simply determine which one.

People who have been vaccinated are also infected and pass the virus on. Then why is it called to be vaccinated out of solidarity?

Vaccinated people can have a high viral load, but they have this high viral load for much less than unvaccinated people. The less viral load, the less you infect others.

Should I take something before the vaccination so that I can tolerate it better?

The most common reactions to vaccination are pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, joint pain, fever and chills. But they are over again after 48 hours at the latest. However, prophylactic use is not necessary. I recommend taking Mexalen or ibuprofen as soon as you realize you are having any vaccine reactions. If you have reactions three to five days later, see your family doctor or vaccination doctor to rule out the very rare thromboses or myocarditis.

Can i have too many antibodies?

No.

Can I choose the vaccine? Which one do you have?

Yes, that is possible. A refresher is recommended, even if you have already been vaccinated with a vector vaccine from Johnson and Johnson or Astra Zeneca, with an mRNA vaccine from Biontech or Moderna.

Is the fourth vaccination coming?

Yes, I think it will be necessary every six months. But I also hope for drugs that will become widely available. There are currently none, but there are promising drugs in the various test phases.
