The measure was approved on Tuesday, December 21, by the committee of experts that advises the Government in the response to the pandemic.
According to the premier, initial results show that the fourth dose is as safe as the third, which has already been administered to almost 50% of the Israeli population, of almost 9.5 million.
The increase in antibodies indicates “a very high probability that the fourth dose will greatly protect vaccinated people, against infection to some extent and against severe symptoms,” Bennett said.
Israel was one of the first countries to start applying the vaccine, a year ago, and to offer booster doses. He is also the only one applying a fourth dose.
The country, however, previously experienced a sharp increase in infections driven by the Delta variant, and now there is another wave driven by Omicron that tripled the cases registered just a week ago.
Bennett assured that his country remains at the “forefront” of coronavirus research, collecting and sharing data that helps the rest of the world fight the pandemic.
The Health Ministry reported more than 46,000 active cases on Tuesday, including 117 seriously ill patients.
At least 8,247 people have died in Israel from Covid-19 since the start of its outbreak, almost two years ago.
