In the traditional neighborhood of Almagro, A captivating space that invites you on a journey through time and pays tribute to an icon of Argentine history.
In August 2022 the gastronomic Nicholas Quirno managed to unite his two passions: cooking and politics. That’s how he was born The Captainwhich transports you back to the 40s and 50s with its atmosphere, menu, iconic vermouths and music.
The place has space for 50 people. At the entrance you can see paintings and armchairs that refer to the period, as well as in the lounge, with wooden tables and padded leather chairs, glassware and chandeliers. The main attractions are the wooden bar and the stained glass windows that replicate the famous image of Avoid in the building of Public Works in the 9th of July Avenue.

Upon entering, the waiters establish a personal relationship, offer a welcome aperitif (the Captain Evita, a vermouth with soda, orange perfume and orange garnish) and they offer their recommendation, according to the diners’ preferences.
The menu is divided into different sections: appetizers, starters, main dishes and drinks. The aim of each option is to take a tour of those flavors that represent the best of the gastronomy of the city of Buenos Aires with some signature touches to surprise and include the public that chooses a vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diet.

The well-rounded appetizers with cold cuts and different cheeses are a great option to accompany the vermouths. Among the starters, the provoleta stands out, which bears the same name as the house and is made with semi-aged provolone cheese marinated in olive oil, oregano and smoked paprika, which is sealed on an iron plate and gratinated in a clay oven with rocket leaves, aged pork shoulder and candied cherry tomatoes.
One of the most popular main dishes is the potato cake called “The General’s Cake” (the preferred menu of Juan Domingo Peron), made with beef braised in a clay oven for four hours. Another of the most popular is the Milanese La Capitana in honor of the gastronomic weakness of Eva Peron: veal Milanese with French fries.

The variety of desserts allows you to choose those vintage options that were common years ago, but are now difficult to find. The highlights are the Vigilante (fresh cheese with sweet potato or quince), the Charlotte (vanilla almond ice cream on a dulce de leche heart with nuts and hot chocolate dip), the Copa Don Pedro (American cream ice cream, chantilly cream, nuts and a measure of whiskey) and the pears in Burgundy with mascarpone ice cream and red fruits.
The vermouths and the bar deserve a special mention: the proposal refers to the classic vermouths of yesteryear, although there are also some signature versions that can be enjoyed by the glass or in a jug. Each of them has a distinction or a story. The Leguisamo Solo (crushed lime, Rosso vermouth, ice and soda), for example, pays homage to the most important rider in the Rioplatense horse racing scene. A journey through time that deserves to be experienced.
