According to media reports, the US tech group Microsoft is content with a role in the background when it comes to its billion-dollar investment in ChatGPT inventor OpenAI. This could also be related to the fact that regulators around the world are increasingly scrutinizing investments by large technology companies in start-ups that deal with artificial intelligence (AI).
Microsoft gave up its place as an “observer” on OpenAI’s board of directors, as reported by the Financial Times and the financial service Bloomberg, among others. Apple will not take on a similar position, it said, citing informed people. Microsoft had signed a billion-dollar pact with OpenAI to be able to incorporate the technology behind the widely known chatbot ChatGPT into its own products. The deal gave OpenAI access to the necessary computer infrastructure for training the AI models.
Antitrust watchdogs investigate
Apple will soon give users of its devices the opportunity to access ChatGPT more easily. According to media reports, this should involve an observer role for the US iPhone company on the OpenAI supervisory board.
Antitrust watchdogs in the European Union and the United States are currently investigating the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI, part of an increased focus on competition in the fast-growing AI business.
Short-term leadership chaos
Among others, the head of the US competition authority FTC, Lina Khan, is worried that tech giants could quickly gain a dominant role here through partnerships with AI start-ups.
Last year, Microsoft took on the role of an observer on OpenAI’s board of directors after the board of directors’ last-minute dismissal of CEO Sam Altman led to leadership chaos. Altman was quickly brought back, but Microsoft saw its investment at risk and wanted safeguards. The position on the board of directors did not carry voting rights.
The newly formed board of directors has made progress over time and the company is moving in the right direction, Microsoft manager Keith Dolliver reportedly wrote in a letter to OpenAI. Microsoft’s position on the board is therefore “no longer necessary”.
