The Linz population statistics in 2021 were practically “saved” by the influx of people into the city. The plus in population growth of over 900 people is, as the Linz figures show, exclusively due to the positive migration balance.
In the previous year, there were 13,741 people who moved away, compared to 14,799 people who moved in, which corresponds to an increase of 1,058. In 2020 there was also such a plus, but with a value of 61 it was significantly smaller.
In contrast to the migration balance, the birth balance is negative – and that for the second year in a row. 2,041 newborns in Linz were counted in 2021, compared to 2,162 deaths. For comparison: in 2020 there were 2,059 births and 2,144 deaths.
There are currently 208,729 main residences registered in the state capital (as of January 1, 2022) (in the previous year it was 207,812 on the reference date, in 2020 it was even slightly more with 207,843). This year, after the slight decrease from 2020 to 2021, there is now a positive development again.
By the way, at the beginning of 2021 this upward trend could not be foreseen, until the second half of the year there was a stagnation in population growth. Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) attributes the fact that there was still movement in the end to the increasing corona vaccination rates and possible opening steps.
