The traditional carnival parade at the Marqués de Sapucaí Sambadrome has not yet been canceled and, according to the mayor, it has a different organization in which for the moment it is possible to think about applying sanitary protocols.
Paes explained that the decision to cancel the street carnival, which dumps more than 12 million people into the streets of Rio for a month, was due to pressure from sponsors, who had to disburse this week about 40 million reais (8 million dollars) to develop the mega event.
The street groups were divided by participation in the popular festival, especially the popular Banda de Ipanema, which draws two million people and whose members and musicians had refused to parade in the middle of the crowd.
As well as Rio de Janeiro, two giants of the most popular celebration in the country have suspended carnival: the cities of Salvador (Bahia) and Fortaleza (Ceará).
In São Paulo, the municipality has not yet defined whether it will hold the street carnival, a decision that is in the hands of a scientific committee.
Like Rio, San Pablo maintains the programming for the sambadrome, which would have protocols similar to soccer matches.
