“The Linz City Hall remains open to the citizens”

“I would also prefer not to have to do that. But we have no other choice,” says SP Mayor Klaus Luger about the upcoming renovation of the Linz town hall. As reported, this is necessary to protect yourself from any attacks at corona demos or similar events. “The climate has become more aggressive,” complains Luger.

The city guides, for whom the town hall is a fixed point on tours with the tour groups, also know this. Many Linzers also come here often, such as Johann Grabner, who says: “For me, the Old Town Hall is a kind of museum that I like to go to and that I regularly take visitors to.”

Luger can reassure him and everyone else in Linz: “The town hall will continue to be open to all citizens.” But how does that fit together with a modification to increase security? “The porters need a direct view of the entrance to the town hall, which they currently do not have. But if they do, then they can easily distinguish between tourist groups or normal visitors and troublemakers,” says Luger.

For him it is clear: “There will be no security gate like in the country house.” He cannot yet say exactly what the conversion plans will look like, nor when construction will start: “We are in contact with the police. When the plans are agreed, we will start the conversion.”
