Djokovic has no chance: Alcaraz with a show of power to win the Wimbledon title

Carlos Alcaraz has won the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon for the second time in a row.

The Spaniard needed just three sets in the rematch of last year’s final against Novak Djokovic. After 2:27 hours, the 21-year-old beat his 16-year-old rival 6:2, 6:2 and 7:6(4).

Princess Kate also attracted attention when she appeared in public for the second time after her cancer diagnosis and presented the awards.

The Spaniard thus made his mark on a historic day for his home country. That evening, according to his compatriots’ wishes, the Spanish national football team was to win its fourth European Championship title in the final against England.

The match certainly did not start to the liking of record major winner Djokovic. In the 14-minute opening game, he initially fended off four break chances, but Alcaraz took advantage of the fifth. When the Spaniard made it 3-1 with a service game to zero and then took the “Djoker’s” serve again to make it 4-1, the first set was decided.

Djokovic came to the net unusually often and only scored four of twelve points at the net. After fending off a rebreak opportunity from the Serb, Alcaraz took a 1-0 set lead to 6-2 after just 41 minutes.

“Mission Impossible” with Tom Cruise

Anyone who expected a big comeback from Djokovic was disappointed. The seven-time Wimbledon winner had to give up his serve right at the start – in front of US actor Tom Cruise, among others. This made Djokovic’s 25th major victory a “mission impossible”. He lost his serve again to make it 2:5 and Alcaraz then used the first set point to make it 6:2 again.

Djokovic, who could have drawn level with Roger Federer (eight Wimbledon titles) with a win, kept the third set a little more open. However, only after he had fended off no fewer than four break points in the third game.

At 3-2 for Djokovic, a turnaround seemed possible when the Serb had a break point. The superiority of the first two sets had evaporated and this was mainly due to a better performance from Djokovic.

But no “heavy arm”

But Alcaraz stepped up a gear and with a convincing break to 5:4 everything seemed clear. Even more so when Alcaraz found three match points at 40:0 after 2 hours and 7 minutes.

But the Spaniard developed the “heavy arm” that is not uncommon in tennis, he became nervous and Djokovic played the balls back steadily. With a lot of help from Alcaraz, the world number two managed to break back to 5:5 and subsequently take a 6:5 lead. Alcaraz then served himself into the tiebreak.

The match finally reached the tension that had been completely lacking in the first two sets. When Alcaraz had his fourth match point at 6:4, he kept his nerve and served out. In the end, it was the fourth major final and fourth victory for Alcaraz, who collected a winner’s check for the equivalent of 3.21 million euros.
