Macron announced his desire to run for a second presidential term

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his desire to again participate in the presidential elections in the country, which will be held in April this year. The French leader said this on Wednesday, January 5, in an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien.

According to him, at the moment the situation with the coronavirus pandemic is a priority issue for him as the President of France, therefore, he has not officially nominated himself for a second term.

“There is no false expectation. I want to. As soon as there are sanitary conditions that will allow it, I will clarify this issue for myself personally in relation to the political equation and let me know, ”said Macron.

In addition, he stressed that for the nation of France “it is very good that there are women candidates” for the post of the new head of state, since this situation ensures equality of women and men.

The presidential elections for the Fifth Republic will be held in the spring of 2022: the first round is scheduled for April 10, the second – on the 24th.

Presidential elections in France will be held under the auspices of right-wing parties – the top three candidates who have already announced their nomination belong to this political sector. Their order, from the most centrist to the far-right, is as follows: the head of the nucleus of the French state – the Ile-de-France region, the single Republican candidate Valerie Pécresse; Leader of the National Rally (formerly the National Front) Marine Le Pen, who lost the 2017 vote in the second round to Emmanuel Macron; publicist and notorious polemicist Eric Zemmour, who in early December announced the creation of his own party with the symbolic name “Reconquista” and who surpassed Marine Le Pen in his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

According to a December poll by the French Institute of Public Opinion (Ifop) on who voters would vote for in the first round, Emmanuel Macron leads with 25%; followed by Marine Le Pen and Valerie Pécresse (17% each), followed by Eric Zemmour (13%). Ifop also gives the victory in the second round to the incumbent president: with a 12% margin against Marine Le Pen, 4% against Valerie Pécresse and 26% against Eric Zemmour.
