US delegation to negotiate with Russia on security to be led by Sherman

The US delegation to talks with Russia in Geneva on security guarantees will be led by First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. This was announced on Tuesday, January 4, by State Department spokesman Ned Price.

“The US delegation will be led by US First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman,” Price said.

According to him, there is a strong consensus between Washington and its European allies that the Russian Federation “will suffer serious consequences if it moves forward and continues to escalate the situation with regard to Ukraine.”

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the Russian delegation would be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov said that the presidents of Russia and the United States agreed that the discussion of security guarantees will take place in three directions – in Geneva, Brussels (within the framework of RF-NATO contacts) and Vienna (RF-OSCE).

It is expected that Russia in the negotiations with the OSCE will be represented by the permanent representative to the organization, Alexander Lukashevich.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
