The road was raised to a height of 13 to 14 metres in the area of the bends, the police announced on Sunday. The earth masses had come loose at an altitude of 1,960 metres above sea level and then extended to 1,390 metres above sea level below the road. The road was already closed to traffic at the time of the rockfall.
Expert bodies will now consult with the road maintenance company, Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, on how to proceed, the executive announced. From the Tyrolean side, Bielerhöhe was accessible as usual.
Severely affected
A rockslide had already made the Silvretta High Alpine Road impassable on the Vorarlberg side on Friday. No vehicles were hit and no one was injured. However, the road must remain closed until at least the beginning of next week, it was said. According to the report, sections of the road were buried and badly damaged.
The 22.3-kilometer-long Silvretta High Alpine Road is particularly popular with day-trippers. It winds its way through 34 bends through high alpine terrain with the Bielerhöhe as its highest point. The winter closure of the connection only ended on June 15.
