The groundbreaking ceremony for the new valley station of the Schafbergbahn took place nine months ago. “Since then, construction progress has been going exactly according to plan despite Corona,” says Bernhard Reithofer, project manager on the part of Salzburg AG, the operating company.
The new valley station will be much more than just a train station, it will also be an experience and event location with restaurants. Salzburg AG wants visitors to stay for as long as possible and thus generate corresponding sales. The new valley station should go into operation in the coming Advent. The Schafbergbahn will continue to operate despite the construction work.
Daniela Kinz, the managing director of Salzburg AG Tourismus, particularly points out the ecological aspect of the future valley station. “As a green tech company, Salzburg AG aims to make a significant contribution to the energy transition,” she says. The entire south-facing roof will be completely covered by a photovoltaic system. This corresponds to an area of around 850 square meters and a maximum output of 156 kilowatts. In the future, energy will be generated using this system and geothermal energy. The old oil heating systems are being replaced by heat pumps. In addition, the building envelope consists largely of heat-insulating glass. In future, this highly efficient glass facade will be shaded by a canopy so that there is no overheating in summer and optimal use of daylight. At the same time, a lot of daylight and indirect light enters the hall, which greatly reduces the need for artificial light during the day.
Plastics are largely avoided in the construction. Instead, natural materials such as steel, wood and mineral building materials are preferred.
The solid construction work should be completed by the end of the year before the wooden construction for the shed roof begins in spring. This special roof construction will in future allow a continuous uninterrupted view of the Schafberg summit from the building. The completion of the adventure quarter is planned for Advent 2022.
