According to the police, the woman was driving her car on the B3 from Melk towards Krems. For reasons unknown, she ended up on the opposite lane in the Krems municipality shortly before 1:30 p.m. and crashed into the car of a 71-year-old from the Melk district.
The 78-year-old was trapped in the car and died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the car was taken to Krems University Hospital with serious injuries. The B3 remained closed until shortly after 3 p.m. due to clean-up work.
