The average temperature rise does not affect every district of Linz equally. While in 2023 19 tropical nights, i.e. nights in which the thermometer does not fall below 20 degrees, were measured at a measuring point near the Otto Glöckel School on Wiener Strasse, there were only five in less sealed districts such as Dornach or Ebelsberg. “We therefore have to convert densely built-up districts in a climate-friendly way,” says Climate Councillor Eva Schobesberger (Greens).

How are the residents of the Markartviertel doing?

A research project at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, in cooperation with the city of Linz, is now taking a closer look at the particularly affected Markartviertel in the statistical district of Bulgariplatz. 18 students on the bachelor’s degree in “Social Work” are spending three semesters investigating how the residents of the district perceive the climatic conditions in their everyday lives and what their outlook for the future looks like. The course is led by Christina Pree and Jürgen Bonath, who lives in the Markartviertel. Community work methods are used, such as the creation of social space or living environment analyses and activating surveys. The results are to be incorporated into the city’s work on climate change adaptation.
