Authority spokeswoman Nina Bussek announced this in a press release on Tuesday afternoon. The defendant – a 41-year-old Jordanian – is accused of stabbing a 24-year-old officer in the right breast from behind with a knife with the intent to kill on May 24, 2024.
“The officer was wearing a stab-proof vest, which is why no injuries occurred,” Bussek explained in the statement. The knife had a blade length of 19.5 centimeters. The stab was so violent that the blade bent. The accused was overpowered and arrested immediately after the crime was committed by other police officers present with the help of a taser.
“Private problems” as background
According to the public prosecutor’s office, he confessed and said that his motive was to commit suicide using the so-called “suicide by cop” method. According to the report, he was determined to attack and kill a police officer and then be shot by the police himself. The Jordanian had happened to observe a police operation – a drunk was throwing glass bottles around at Keplerplatz. He then spontaneously decided to attack a police officer and then be killed. The 41-year-old’s “private problems” are said to have been the reason for his actions.
Full sanity
“A medical expert report shows that the nature of the weapon and the type of attack would have led to fatal or at least life-threatening injuries without the police officer’s protective vest,” said public prosecutor’s spokeswoman Bussek. Two medical and psychiatric experts attested that the defendant was fully responsible and therefore criminally responsible. The knife attack was recorded on video from a police bus. The defendant’s DNA was found on the weapon.
The crime scene is located within a weapons ban zone imposed in Favoriten. This came into force on March 30th after a series of stabbings occurred in the Reumannplatz – Keplerplatz area. Several attempted murder cases are already pending in court in this connection.
The charges are not yet legally binding. The defense has 14 days to object. If this happens, the Vienna Higher Regional Court (OLG) would have to examine the charges.
