The name Eschenau is known far beyond the district borders of Grieskirchen for the tent festival that the volunteer fire department organizes every year. Since 2023, the FF, together with the Neukirchen cycling club, has been using this fame for a good cause: At the “Sandbach Charity Cycle”, the organizations collect donations for “Herzkinder” and the “Rollenden Engel”. At the premiere last year, 10,500 euros were raised. The event will enter its second round on August 30th.
The idea is simple: “The participants pay a 15 euro entry fee, which is donated,” explains Roland Pöcherstorfer from the Neukirchen cycling club. There are also donations from local companies, which double the entry fees of some participants, as well as from the main sponsor – this year it is the Gföllner company.
Seven kilometers away
The idea for the event came from Gerhard Moser, former fire chief of Eschenau and member of the Neukirchen cyclists. “We had been looking for a volunteer for a long time and were immediately enthusiastic about the idea,” says the current Eschenau commander Martin Ennsfellner.
The route is seven kilometers long and can also be managed by amateur cyclists. The start is at the tent festival area. “It’s not about time, but about riding together and the good cause,” says Pöcherstorfer. The firefighters from the Eschenau fire department will be responsible for securing the route free of charge. The entry fee includes a free ticket to the tent festival – so after the sport, the participants can celebrate their achievement there in style.
The atmosphere last year was excellent, says Pöcherstorfer: “Some residents put out drinks, the riders chatted with them, had a drink and then continued cycling. It was a unique experience.”
Registration on site
There are currently difficulties with pre-registration on the website, but that’s not a problem: participants can simply register on site on August 30, pay the entry fee and get going. The start is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and they can do as many laps as they want until 5:30 p.m.
“We are very excited. I am sure that the whole thing will be very well received again,” says Commander Ennsfellner.
