After the new connection between the Uruguayan capital and Miami, via Lime, SKY announced a new route that will link Montevideo with Rio de Janeiro. This city thus joins the list of Salvador de Bahia and Florianopolis, also in Brazil; destinations that the Chilean airline incorporated into its offering in 2024.

The new direct route will connect passengers from both countries in just three hours and, in principle, will operate only during the summer season, starting on December 16. The projection is that 5,000 people per month will travel on these flights with four weekly frequencies, promoting the connectivity and the tourism between Uruguay and Brazil
“With this launch, we hope that passengers will have more options to fly directly between these two cities. We also seek to continue strengthening the SKY brand in both countries, allowing more passengers to enjoy the tourist attractions of the Uruguayan capital and the Brazilian city with affordable prices on the best low-cost airline in the world.” South America”, commented Carmen Gloria Serratcommercial director of SKY Airline.
For Uruguay This is great news as it is in line with the government’s objectives of continuing to improve the country’s connectivity – especially after the paralysis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic for the aeronautical sector – as well as promoting Brazilian tourism in the national territory, which makes up for the lower arrival of Argentines during peak seasons.
In this regard, the commercial manager of Uruguay Airports, Matias Carlucciosaid: “Our goal is to bring Uruguay closer to the world, so we are pleased that the work we do between the public and private sectors to enhance connectivity has had these results.”
SKY routes in 2024
SKY airline returned to the country this year, with the aim of taking four international routes that will connect with direct flights to Montevideo with the cities of Salvador de Bahia and Florianópolis (Brazil), Santiago de Chili and Lima (Peru). According to estimates, SKY will transport more than 100,000 passengers in and out of the country next year.
This announcement came amid a recovery of 80% of the frequencies that operated in 2019 and had decreased during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company, for its part, stated that the new connections will allow it to expand the possibility of attracting Chilean tourists, an important market because “their vacation habits are strong in February, which is when the number of visitors decreases.” Uruguay”.
Also, in May, the route from the capital to Miami began operating, with a stopover in Lima, with three weekly frequencies from Montevideo and another three from the American city. It is the only one low cost in connecting both destinations.
