The judges and public prosecutors feel that the criticism of the investigation committee headed by Martin Kreutner of individual investigations in the Pilnacek case is an indiscriminate attack. If a “devastating report” is issued to “the judiciary” in general terms, this “blanket criticism is firmly rejected,” it was said yesterday in a joint statement by the Association of Judges and Public Prosecutors and their trade union representatives. The aim is to ensure the “internationally recognized high quality of the Austrian constitutional state.”
The judges and prosecutors are also calling for a public prosecutor’s office that is independent of politics. There is currently no agreement between the governing parties, the ÖVP and the Greens, on how exactly this could be structured. In addition to a public prosecutor’s office, the professional associations also demanded that politicians should permanently provide the required number of additional judicial and public prosecutor’s posts.
