They were trying to bring a family to safety after a fire broke out on their property when they fell into a precipice while putting out the flames. For them, any help came too late, Italian media reported.

“The two firefighters wanted to save a family whose house was threatened by the flames. But they fell into a precipice and were engulfed by the flames,” said the mayor of Nova Siri (Matera), Antonello Mele, commenting on the deaths of the two 45-year-old firefighters. The Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

While Italy is suffering from a severe heat wave, several forest fires have broken out in southern Italy. The regions of Calabria and Sicily are particularly affected.
