During his visit to the president Luis Lacalle Pouthe candidate spoke about the results of the crimes published by the Ministry of Interior this week about the first half of the year. “This government is going to do something that has not happened in any administration so far: it will leave the next one with fewer reports of crimes than it received, in robberies, thefts, cattle rustling and in homicides”, Delgado assured in a press conference.


Meanwhile, he celebrated that this administration managed to fulfill the promise of reducing crimes. “Everything was looking at the percentages; do you remember when they promised to reduce crimes by 30%? robberies? Well, this government managed to do it,” he said.
On the other hand, he went against some statements by leaders of the Frente Amplio who questioned the Interior Ministry’s numbers. “When the news is encouraging, there is no need to question whoever does the numbers, because they are the same ones who did them before; before they gave figures every year that grew and from 2018 to 2019 were the years with the highest indicators of reported crimes. In this, what we must do is rejoice as a citizen and not criticize based on an electoral calculation,” he stressed.
The numbers of the Interior
This Monday at a press conference, the Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Martinellireported a general decrease in reports of all crimes during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023, where a 5.8% drop in homicides stands out. Minister Martinelli clarified that 57% of them have already been cleared by the Justice.
The number of homicide complaints totaled about 180, about 11 fewer than in the first half of last year, although about 8 more than in 2019, before the current government came to power.
In turn, reports of theft rose from 59,559 in the first six months of 2023 to 55,090 in the current year, meaning a decrease of 7.5%. On the other hand, there was a sharp drop in robberies (25%), and an even greater drop in cattle rustling, reaching 29.3%.
