After around 5500 confirmed cases the day before, due to the dominance of the Omikron virus variant, 9761 new cases were added, as emerged from the figures from the Ministry of Interior and Health, which were delayed due to incorrect laboratory reports. That corresponded to an increase of 77.6 percent within a single day.
1010 people were in hospital treatment with Covid-19 on Wednesday, 28 fewer than on Tuesday. Of these, 309 were cared for in intensive care units, a decrease of seven people. With 18 further deaths since Tuesday, 13,802 people have died as a result of the corona virus since the outbreak of the pandemic.
With 3191, most of the new SARS-CoV-2 cases came from Vienna, followed by Salzburg and Tyrol with 1,587 and 1,413 respectively. The districts with seven-day incidences (number of new infections in the past week per 100,000 inhabitants, note) over 1,000 have already doubled to four on Wednesday, according to the AGES dashboard: Sankt Johann im Pongau (1,717.6) and Kitzbühel (1,853.9) in Salzburg and Tyrol were now joined by Tamsweg (1,148.2) and Landeck (1,238.0), as well as Salzburg and Tyrol. In Vienna this value is 505.3.
The official vaccination rate in Austria fell from 70.9 percent to 70.3 percent on Tuesday, despite 46,651 additional bites. The reason is the expiry of the vaccination certificate validity with only one Janssen vaccination (Johnson & Johnson) on January 3rd, because the associated adjustment of the data status of the vaccination certificates was made today, Wednesday. Of the 46,651 vaccinations on Tuesday, 5,127 were first stitches (eleven percent), 15,444 second stitches (33 percent) and 26,080 third stitches (56 percent).
The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 76 percent, in Lower Austria 72.3 percent of the population have valid vaccination protection, in Styria 70.4 percent. In the remaining federal states, this value is below the Austrian average of 70.3, and it is still lowest in Upper Austria at 66.1 percent.
