The Inner City Criterium will take place in Wels for the 25th time on July 24th. As always, the focus is on the sporting performance of the Austrian World Tour cyclists.
Paul Resch, President of the Upper Austrian Cycling Association, has also come up with something special for the anniversary: he has invited the stars of past inner-city criteriums to Wels for a “legends’ ride”. “They are all still connected to cycling and were incredibly happy,” says Resch. At 11 a.m. the cycling greats will set off from the Hotel Hauser for a tour of the Wels area – an opportunity for fans to see the professionals.
48 kilometers in 60 laps
Otherwise, the organizers offer visitors the usual comfort: they can follow the race on four video walls. Felix Gall, Patrick Konrad and their colleagues start the challenging course at 7 p.m. They go around the city center 60 times, covering a total of 48 kilometers. The women’s race begins at 6 p.m. The popular competition, in which the winners are drawn at 8.30 p.m., is also returning.
A personal highlight is the children’s race, says Paul Resch: “It is always very well received and is a great way to get children excited about cycling.” It starts at 4:45 p.m., with the young athletes starting in different age groups. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a racing bike or a mountain bike – even balance bikes are allowed. The only thing that is compulsory is a helmet,” says Resch.
Registration is online on the website ooe-classics.at or at least half an hour before the start of the race on site. At the end, all participants receive a medal, and the top three in each age group receive shoes from the main sponsor Boa. (vaba)
