The wild animals, which are native to the rainforests of South America, are considered “cute” because of their small size, are often kept illegally as pets and are heavily hunted. The ongoing loss of their habitat is also contributing to the decline in the population, the zoo reported on Thursday.

Only a good eye can spot the twins on their parents’ backs in the Salzburg Zoo. At around seven centimeters, the little marmosets are currently about half the size of the adults, who reach a body length of up to 15 centimeters. “Whether tiny or not, the care provided by mother Eloise and father Viv is enormous,” says zoo director Sabine Grebner. “The birth of the two little pygmy marmosets is once again an important contribution to the preservation of this species of monkey,” explained curator Lisa Sernow.
