This is a new record since the pandemic broke out in February 2020, the Italian health authorities reported on Wednesday. On Tuesday, 170,844 cases had been reported in 24 hours. In addition, 231 deaths were registered, up from 259 the previous day.
Around one million corona tests were analyzed in the past 24 hours, 17 percent were positive. 1,428 corona patients were in the intensive care units of the Italian hospitals. Another 13,364 Covid sufferers were cared for in normal wards. 5.1 million Italians have recovered from the coronavirus since the pandemic broke out in February 2020.
Italy is meanwhile tightening the corona measures. The government examined on Wednesday an extension of the 2G obligation for employees.
