Road operator Asfinag and toll specialist Kapsch TrafficCom have installed what they say is Austria’s first wooden toll bridge on the S 37 expressway in Carinthia. The bridge stores 15 tons of carbon dioxide, while comparable steel bridges cause up to 30 tons of CO2 during production, the two project partners announced in a press release this week.
The load-bearing core of the toll bridge is made of spruce laminated timber. More weather-resistant larch wood was used for the outer layer, which can be repaired more easily in the event of damage. Installation on the motorway was completed within a day. The electricity for operating the toll bridge comes from its own photovoltaic system. A battery storage system was installed to ensure there is enough energy available during the night and in bad weather. “Wood as a building material can play an important role on the motorway in the future,” say the two Asfinag board members Hartwig Hufnagl and Herbert Kasser.
