Live longer and healthier: a small intervention can lead to old age?

Can aging soon be slowed down?

The search for a means to slow down the aging process is a common thread throughout human history. This is why the following recent research result is considered “particularly exciting”: Scientists in Singapore have blocked the messenger substance interleukin-11 in mice. The treatment significantly reduced the number of deaths caused by cancer in the animals. It also reduced the many diseases caused by fibrosis, chronic inflammation and poor metabolism. The researchers observed a reduction in muscle breakdown and an improvement in muscle strength. However, only a few side effects were detected.

Drugs in development

If mice were treated from the age of 75 weeks, this led to an extension of the average lifespan by 22.5 percent in male mice and 25 percent in female mice, reports the German Pharmaceutical Journal. The animals lived an average of just under three years – compared to less than two and a half years in untreated mice. The “aging protein”, which is also produced in increased quantities in the human body from the age of around 55 and is responsible for many age-related diseases, was switched off. Clinical trials on humans are lacking, but such drugs are being developed as therapies for diseases.
