Flooded cellars, streams overflowing their banks and a landslide: the members of the Spital am Pyhrn fire brigade in the Kirchdorf district had their hands full on Friday afternoon. While the rest of the country remained dry, a storm broke out over the municipality on the border with Styria. And it was so local that there was no more precipitation just beyond the municipal borders, towards Windischgarsten and Edlbach.

“It came relatively quickly – and heavily,” says Mario Steinermayr, one of the operations managers. Around 50 liters of water and more must have fallen per square meter within a very short time. Too much: There were floods and mudslides. The fire brigade was dispatched with several vehicles and 26 people, cellars were pumped out and affected areas were secured with sandbags. 7 areas were affected, says the operations manager. They had been dealt with by around 9 p.m.
