Sea of lights and memory of the victims of the pandemic

It should be a well attended, but silent event, with mask discipline and enough distance between the participants. At the rally the day after tomorrow, the more than 13,000 corona deaths in Austria will be remembered. A sign should be set for those who are particularly suffering from the pandemic. It starts on Friday, 6.30 p.m., on Braunauer Stadtplatz. At 7 p.m. candles are lit or other light sources are used. Then 15 minutes of silence follow. Whistles, megaphones and the like are not permitted. Only the church bells should ring especially for this occasion. There are no posters, only a large banner with the words “Braunau can do more” is in preparation. “The district has often been negative in the headlines in recent weeks. The rally is intended to show that Braunau can do more. More education, more cohesion, more togetherness,” says Andreas Penninger, who initiated the rally.

The starting point was the attack on a nurse in Braunau during a demonstration by opponents of the Corona measures. The OÖNachrichten reported on the incident in which a nurse was insulted and doused with coffee. “A limit has definitely been exceeded,” says Penninger. Through his involvement, a private initiative has been formed across all social groups from business, church, culture and civil society. The rally is also intended to be a counterpoint to the demos against the government’s corona protection measures. In addition to Braunau, Simbach also wants to take part in the campaign, a chain of lights is to be formed over the Inn Bridge.

The rally is just the beginning of the initiative. After January 7th, further campaigns are to follow. At information evenings, topics should be dealt with that are particularly moving in the Corona crisis. How are the children and young people? Like the intensive care nurses? What can doctors report? “We have a lot in mind,” says Penninger.
