Donald Trump has already taken aim at the possible new rival in the presidential debate – at his own level. “She’s crazy,” Trump ranted at a campaign event in the US state of Michigan at the weekend. He could tell by her laughter. “She’s crazy.”
Harris currently has the best chance of becoming the Democratic presidential candidate. Harris has a financial advantage over other replacement candidates such as California Governor Gavin Newsom or Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Since she is running a joint campaign with Biden as a renewed candidate for the second highest state office, all previous donations to the Biden-Harris team would go to her.
Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Her father immigrated to the United States from Jamaica to study economics. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a breast cancer researcher who immigrated from India. After studying in Washington and California, Harris became the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, she became the first woman to hold the post of attorney general in California. She entered the U.S. Senate in 2017 before choosing Joe Biden as his vice presidential candidate in 2019.
In the debate about Joe Biden’s withdrawal, she had recently shown herself to be loyal in public. “Biden is our candidate,” she recently told CBS News. “We beat Trump once, and we will beat him again, period.”
Harris recently gained a high profile as part of a campaign for abortion rights, which she led across the country. However, Biden also gave his deputy some rather thankless and complicated tasks. For example, she was temporarily responsible for dealing with the migration crisis on the border with Mexico.
Behind Trump in polls
The Democrats cannot necessarily expect that they would quickly and clearly overtake Trump with Harris. In a CNN poll published four days after the Biden-Trump debate, she did better against the likely Republican presidential candidate than Biden, but also remained behind Trump: At 45 percent, she was two points behind the Republican, while Biden was six points behind at 43 percent.
In a confrontation with Trump, Harris could of course leverage her experience as a former Attorney General: Trump, the first former US president in history to be convicted of a criminal offence since his guilty verdict in the New York hush money trial, would be an opponent who suits Harris.
