He Overtime casethe political scandal that shook the north of the country and the National Party (PN) and which led to the conviction of Mayor of Artigas Pablo Caram to 14 months of probation for “failure of a public official to report irregularities” and his niece, the Former MP Valentina Dos Santos due to usurpation of functions, continues to be the talk of the town.

On the one hand, the departmental councilors of the Broad Front (FA) believe that there is an “institutional crisis” and a “power vacuum” in the department after the conviction and the consequent disqualification that Caram has to hold public office due to the suspension of his citizenship. In turn, the PN councilors maintain that Caram continues to be the mayor and that they are waiting for a resolution from the Electoral Courtwhich is why they deny that there is a “headless” situation in the Intendancy.

Caram’s line of succession is more than complicated, since while Dos Santos was expected to take his place, she was also sentenced. The second substitute was Augusto Rodriguezwho passed away in December 2022, while the third in line is Elita Volpiwho is under investigation and is believed to be involved in the case, although she would be interested in taking up the position. In fourth place is the Mario Predebona rural producer linked to the PN, but who is not involved in political activity.

Now, the ministers of the Electoral Court will have to decide whether to effectively suspend the citizenship of Caram, who decided to submit to the analysis of the Ethics Commission of the PN. For her part, Dos Santos is also bound by the pronouncement of the state body, but she directly resigned from the PN.

“There is no institutional crisis in Artigas, we have a mayor”

The nationalist councilor, Marcelo Soravillastated in the last few hours to Subrayado that “there is no institutional crisis in Artigas,” and that Caram is still the mayor. “In case the Electoral Court decides otherwise and citizenship is suspended, we have a substitute,” he stressed.

“Today Pablo Caram is still the mayor, if he resigns Valentina (Dos Santos) will take over, and if Valentina cannot take over, there is the notary Elita Volpi,” he concluded.
