Lula asked Nicolás Maduro to respect the result if he loses the elections in Venezuela

The Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaurged the government of Venezuela to respect the outcome of the weekend’s election, saying he was “scared” by the threat from the current president, Nicolas Maduro, of a bloodbath if he loses.

“I have told Maduro that the only possibility for Venezuela to return to normality is if there is a widely respected electoral process”Lula told international news agencies.

“I was scared by Maduro’s comments that Venezuela could face a bloodbath if he loses”Lula said. “Maduro needs to learn that when you win, you stay; when you lose, you leave.”

“I hope this happens for the good of Venezuela, for the good of South America,” he added.

Lula said he would send his foreign policy adviser, former foreign minister Celso Amorim, to monitor the Venezuelan elections, and that the Brazilian electoral court would also send observers.

“If Maduro wants to help resolve the return of growth in Venezuela, the return of the people who left Venezuela and establish a state of economic growth, he must respect the democratic process,” the president stressed.
