Canberra and Tokyo intend to sign a mutual access agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of defense and security, during a virtual summit of heads of government of the two states – Australia and Japan. This was announced on Thursday, January 6, by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at a press conference.
He said the treaty would establish a legal framework that would allow the military personnel of the two countries to make reciprocal visits to conduct joint exercises or training.
It is noted that this kind of agreement between Australia and Japan will be concluded for the first time.
“This agreement will be the only one of its kind concluded by Japan, which indicates a high level of trust and partnership. [наших стран]to ensure the security of the Indo-Pacific region and the protection of democratic values, ”said Morrison.
In December, it became known that Japan will spend a record $ 262.8 billion on defense in five years. The country’s authorities want to strengthen its missile defense. On September 16, the United States agreed to expand its military presence in Australia. The country will be provided with assistance in obtaining nuclear submarines from the American side, as announced by the head of the Pentagon Lloyd Austin.
On September 15, US President Joe Biden announced that Australia would equip its navy with American nuclear submarines.
