The photo shared on the online service X shows the 53-year-old smiling on a beach with his young sons Gabriel and Max, with his wife Stella leaning on him. The photo was only commented on with the words “Family photo!” Assange’s wife did not disclose where the photo was taken.
However, local media assume that it was taken in Assange’s home country of Australia, where the WikiLeaks founder returned after his release in June. In the photo, Assange is wearing a sky blue fleece sweater, dark long trousers, a black hat and a backpack. With his wife in his arms, he looks smilingly at his sons sitting on a rock.
Stella Assange, who married the WikiLeaks founder while he was in prison, said shortly after his return home: “Julian plans to swim in the sea every day. He plans to sleep in a real bed. He wants to try real food. And he plans to enjoy his freedom.” On July 3, Assange’s birthday, she published a photo of him and her arm in arm in front of tall trees with the simple comment “Free!”.
A hero for his supporters
Assange returned to his home country Australia at the end of June after a total of twelve years of embassy asylum and prison in Great Britain. As part of an agreement with the US justice system, the Australian pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pass on information for national defense purposes. He was formally sentenced to five years and two months in prison.
This sentence had already been served by his five-year sentence in the British Belmarsh prison. Before his imprisonment, Assange had found asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years. The US judiciary had accused Assange of publishing around 700,000 confidential documents about US military and diplomatic activities from 2010 onwards. The papers contained explosive information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the killing of civilians and the mistreatment of prisoners by US soldiers.
For his supporters, Assange is a hero who fights for freedom of expression. His critics see him as a traitor who has endangered the security of the United States and intelligence sources.
