The day the world burned: the US and Europe suffered the hottest day in history
Last year the record was broken for four days in a row, July 3-6, as extreme temperatures driven by climate change caused extreme heat across the Northern Hemisphere.
Every month since June 2023 (13 months in a row) was the warmest on record for the planet, compared to the corresponding month in previous years, according to Copernicus.
Some scientists suggested that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year on recordas climate change and the natural weather phenomenon El Niño (which ended in April) pushed temperatures even higher this year.
