French police said on Tuesday that the men, aged around 50, are now being investigated for gang theft. The South American suspects are said to have stolen the luggage of two women who wanted to fly to the United Arab Emirates at Nice airport ten days ago.
16,000 euros in cash
The luggage included jewelry estimated to be worth 1.5 million euros. The car of the suspected thieves was identified using images from surveillance cameras at the airport. In the seats and behind a false panel, 16,000 euros in cash and 26 pieces of jewelry from luxury brands were found, as well as several fake passports from Mexico and Peru.

According to information from police sources, this is a typical modus operandi of South American criminal gangs that use middle-aged men who pose as guests in luxury European hotels to identify wealthy victims. Spanish and German police officers, who are deployed as reinforcements during the Olympic Games in France, were also involved in the border police investigation.
