Etna spews large amounts of lava: air traffic in Catania suspended

Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano

A thick cloud of lava, magmatic gases and rocks hung over the more than 3,300-meter-high mountain, as reported by the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Explosions were also seen and heard again and again. Flights had to be suspended at Catania International Airport.

Flights cancelled

Due to the eruption and the associated ash clouds, no planes can currently take off or land, the airport operator announced on the online service X. Passengers were asked to contact their airline for information. At Vienna Airport, the two afternoon flights from Catania by Ryanair and Austrian were listed as cancelled on Tuesday. An Austrian flight that was supposed to take off from Schwechat to the Sicilian port city at midday also had to be cancelled.

The INVG reported that a six-kilometer-high column of smoke rose above Etna. Ash rained down on several towns in the vicinity of Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, there were initially no reports of major damage.

Europe’s largest active volcano

Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano. The mountain is about 3,350 meters high. However, the exact height changes frequently due to eruptions and cinder cones.

Most recently, Catania Airport had to suspend operations on July 5 due to an eruption of Mount Etna. Millions of people arrive at the airport every year to vacation in the eastern part of Sicily. The Mediterranean island is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.
