The “International Pottery Market” on Steyr’s town square is as much a part of summer as a dip in the cool water. This year, the three-day show in the historic center is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It starts tomorrow, Friday. The “clay” artists from many countries will be showing their artfully crafted exhibits every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sunday.
However, the Steyr Pottery Market will not be “officially” opened until the second day by Mayor Markus Vogl and City Councilor Evelyn Kattnigg. The Steyr City Band will also be playing at the Leopoldi Fountain on Saturday at 10 a.m.
In the anniversary year, the organizers have also come up with a special innovation: On Sunday, for the first time, there will be a prize nomination by visitors under the motto “My most beautiful piece.” Each exhibitor will present a selected, saleable work from their range, which will be the focus of the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony itself will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m. Shopping vouchers for the pottery market will also be drawn from all those visitors who took part in the evaluation.
Old craftsmanship
The 30th edition of the “International Pottery Market” in Steyr will once again offer a wide variety of exhibits, from everyday objects to exquisite works of art. You will also find jewelry, clocks and lamps. The various techniques used by potters to laboriously fire the products made from earth are just as inexhaustible: the path from a lump of clay to an artfully glazed vase is certainly a long one. Pottery itself, like basket weaving, is one of the first and oldest crafts of mankind.
