The demand for an “overnight euro” for farmers in Alpine regions, which Chamber of Agriculture President Josef Moosbrugger raised in an interview with OÖNachrichten, has been met with rejection by Austrian hoteliers.

“Agriculture receives by far the most funds from the EU’s multiannual financial framework (…). To then want to take a little money from the coffers of another industry: that’s quite a bold move,” criticized Walter Veit, President of the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV), in a press release on Friday.
Hoteliers Association: “Unrealistic”
President of the Chamber of Agriculture Josef Moosbrugger (VP) had caused a stir with the idea of agricultural businesses sharing in the profits from tourism. He referred to the difficult situation for many agricultural businesses in Alpine regions.

From the hoteliers’ association’s point of view, the demand is “unrealistic”. “If the farmers mow the alpine pastures for us, we also want the hay. And we are happy to sell it back to them,” explained Veit.
