When the final of the 33rd Innviertel Football Cup between SV Lambrechten and Union Esternberg kicks off today at 6 p.m., it is very likely that the thermometer will still show temperatures beyond the 30-degree mark.
Either way: The players of the two finalists don’t need to get too excited anymore, there’s too much at stake today. While the SVL wants to win the title in front of their home crowd for the first time in the 65-year history of the cup, the “Sauwaldveilchen” from Esternberg could become the sole record winners. So far they share this title with SK Altheim, both clubs have won the cup five times.
“After 15 years, we want to bring the cup back to Esternberg,” says sports director Klaus Goldberger, setting the tone for the regional league team. However, he expects a match “on equal terms” against the district league team.
Lambrechten coach Gerhard Obermair sees the situation ahead of today’s final in a similar way. “If you look at the club’s development in recent years, winning the title today would be a crowning achievement and the reward for the hard and successful work.”
