What’s behind the significant increase in electric car sales?

The electric car sales showed significant growth in recent years in Uruguay, within the framework of a trend that is repeated internationally, with China topping the table.

In 2021, there were only 245 electric vehicle operations, compared to the 2,198 recorded in the first half of this year, according to a report published by Exanthe based on data from the Uruguayan Automotive Trade Association (ACAU).

From 2021 to 2022, sales increased by 315%, totalling 1,016 transactions. In 2023, the increase was 81%, totalling 1,841, while in the first six months of 2024 that figure was already exceeded by 19%, with 2,198.

There was also an improvement in participation on total sales, which went from a timid 0.5% in 2021, to 1.9% in 2022 and 3.2% in 2023, to reach a significant 7.8% in the first half of this year.

Investments and incentives

Behind this improvement in sales of electric cars, appear the investments of the government in infrastructure, which multiplied the public network and achieved the milestone of 300 chargers throughout the country, in addition to the 100 fast charging points, which allow 80% of the energy to be recovered battery in five minutes.

At the same time, the Executive promoted a series of fiscal benefits as the exoneration of Imesi, compared to 23 and 46% for gasoline vehicles and 115% for diesel vehicles. Another measure was the non-payment of the Global Tariff Rate (TGA) and the patent tax rate of 2.25% of the market value, less than half of the 5% of conventional vehicles.

Other benefits include a discount of between 50 and 100% of UTE, the delivery of Energy Efficiency Certificates (EEC) by the MIEM and the awarding of scores under the “clean technologies” indicator of the regime Comap.

What is happening worldwide?

Globally, the electric car market has shown remarkable growth. In 2023, almost 14 million units were sold globally, representing 18% of total vehicle sales, Exante said in its survey.

While the dynamism is widespread in many countries, it stands out China, where transactions in the sector are practically doubling every year based on investments from the government of that country.

Electric car operations in the Asian giant reached 40% of total car sales, compared to 20% for the European Union and 10% of USA.
