Town meeting (AC) ratified this Sunday during his National Congress to Lorena Quintana as a candidate for vice president of the Republic and running mate of the leader and presidential candidate, Guido Manini Rios.
Following the June 30 elections, the third force in the Multicolor Coalition took its time to define its formula for the presidential elections in October. Last week, the leader Manini Rios had proposed the name of Quintana as a vice presidential candidate, something that generated certain tensions within the political force.
This Sunday at the City Council Congress held at the Welcome Club in Montevideo, Quintana had the support of some 338 delegates, while 121 were for Rosana de Oliveirathere were 10 abstentions and 1 absence.
Controversial decision?
Although it was already expected that parity formula According to previous comments, the choice of a woman as a companion on the council formula draws attention in Town meeting, openly against certain equality policies that tend to be described as “gender ideology.”
However, the choice of Lorena Quintana, a doctor of medicine, head of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and member of the Meeting National Christian goes beyond completing the binomial in parity. Manini Ríos himself explained it: she is “a very specialized professional dedicated to the subject drug addictions and family, which are two of the pillars of the campaign and proposals of Town meeting from day one, and always,” he told Radio Monte Carlo.
“We understand that the problem of drug addiction and drug policies is a central issue for Uruguayan society, it is one of the major issues that affect people. And we want to address the major issues that affect people, such as this one, the debt, and so many other issues that we understand are important,” added the senator and leader of the council.
He also pointed out that Quintana is the one who “arouses the support of most groups, which makes her an excellent candidate.” Although the fact that she is against abortion and euthanasia may also have influenced her choice.
But, as much support as Quintana may have, not all sectors of the council were pleased with the news announced on Monday night. And the official appointment will only take place on Sunday, with the vote at the party congress.
In this regard, other names were put on the table: that of the deputy Rafael Menendez, of Tacuarembó; and that of Rosanna de Oliverapresident of the National Institute for Social Inclusion of Adolescents (Inisa) and member of the Free Peoples’ Spaceone of the groups of Town meeting.
One of the complaints heard in the ranks of the council is that Manini Ríos did not proceed in the most appropriate manner regarding the nomination of the candidate for vice president, and that the names should have come from the national groups and not from the party leader.
Amidst the differences that exist in Town meetingthe conventionals will have to vote on Sunday for a candidate for vice president. De Olivera, from the Espacio de los Pueblos Libres, is unlikely to be elected, since her sector obtained 24% of the votes. But Quintana is not 100% sure of victory either, since her sector – which voted under the sub-lemma of The Loyalty and Unity Column from the senator Guillermo Domenech for the national congress—reached 48%, which is not an absolute majority.
