The 58-year-old sustained fatal injuries. The man wanted to climb the 4,478-meter-high peak in Valais via the Hörnligrat with a friend in a two-man rope team. At an altitude of around 3,650 meters, the two alpinists were surprised by a rockfall, the cantonal police reported.
A mountaineer had already suffered a fatal accident on the Matterhorn on Thursday. The alpinist fell about 100 meters down the east face at a height of about 3,460 meters above sea level.
