A bike tour for a pensioner from the Amstetten district ended with a rescue operation on Monday: The 71-year-old had cycled with three friends from Ebensee to the Rettenbachalm and then on towards Bad Ischl. The tour was almost over – there were only a good 9 kilometers of forest road left to go to Bad Ischl – when the accident occurred at around 2:40 p.m. The man from Lower Austria, who was riding ahead, must have missed a pothole and fell heavily. He immediately lost consciousness and suffered a cardiac arrest shortly afterwards.

Doctor resuscitated 71-year-old

A companion, a 62-year-old doctor from Germany, immediately administered first aid and began resuscitation. The resuscitation measures were successful: Together with the emergency doctor from the rescue helicopter “Martin 3” and other rescue workers, the 71-year-old was stabilized. He was taken by helicopter to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Vöcklabruck, the police announced on Monday evening.

It was not the only serious cycling accident on Monday in Upper Austria: In the Innviertel, the rescue helicopter was also deployed after a 31-year-old racing cyclist was hit by a car.
