The Bosnians are said to have carried out 48 coups in just seven months from July 2023 to February 2024 in Flachgau and neighboring Upper Austria in varying compositions. According to the indictment, they mainly stole cash, jewelry and gold coins. The men stated that their motive was financial hardship.
The 44-year-old first defendant, who had a previous conviction abroad, received a prison sentence of five years. The 56-year-old second defendant received three and a half years and the 34-year-old third defendant, who had been convicted of being an accessory, received two and a half years in prison. In case of doubt, the jury assumed that the total damage was less than 300,000 euros, as the spokeswoman for the Salzburg Regional Court, Christina Bayrhammer, informed.
Six break-ins in one night
According to the investigation, the perpetrators even broke in six times in one night. They mainly went on burglary sprees on weekends in the evenings or at night, targeting private houses where the lights were not on. In Flachgau, they mainly carried out their mischief in Henndorf, Eugendorf and Elixhausen. To get into the apartments, they drilled or forced open windows, entrance doors or patio doors. The third defendant is said to have taken on the role of the transporter.
Sad financial circumstances as a motive
Traces from the crime scene and DNA as well as data analysis from cell phones convicted the accused. The three accused, who are in custody, confessed in court. They said their dire financial circumstances were their motive. Some of the break-ins remained attempted. The second and third accused have so far had no criminal record.
