“We are being informed that now at the door of the embassy of Argentina There are armed, hooded men who appear to be members of the Bolivarian National Police. I would like to ask journalists and residents to go there at the end of this press conference and accompany those who are being sheltered. Their work has been indispensable. We have to protect them.would be a outburst to break the Caracas Agreement“, Machado said at a press conference.
The convention mentioned by the opposition leader states: “Asylum granted in legations, warships and military camps or aircraft to persons persecuted for political reasons or crimes, shall be respected by the territorial State in accordance with the provisions of this Convention“.
Six opposition members granted asylum in the Argentine embassy in Caracas
Urruchurtu has been sheltered in the Argentine diplomatic residence since March, along with five other people, following the arrests of Henry Alviarez, coordinator of the Machado movement’s organization, Vente Venezuela, and the national political secretary of that movement, Dignora Hernandez.
At that time, the Prosecutor’s Office issued arrest warrants against other opposition figures and it was then that the Argentine Embassy decided to offer them refuge. The accusation against them was for the alleged crime of conspiracy.
Although Venezuelan government sources said in April that they had granted safe-conduct passes to Machado’s collaborators to allow them to leave the diplomatic residence, this has not been confirmed until now.
Foreign Minister Diana Mondino said: “This is an outrage”
In this regard, Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino expressed her concern about the situation and said: “It would be a real nonsense. They are not complying with international conventions in any way. These people have been in the Embassy for several months. because the Maduro regime does not let them leave the country, This is also an outrage“.
He also added: “They are expelling diplomats from several countries and are not giving any authorization or response as to what to do with the people who are refugees. They have the right to be in our Embassy. In the event that our diplomats had to leave the embassy, the Venezuelan government has a obligation to them. This is unheard of“.
