Iran’s Supreme Leader vows to attack Israel after assassination of senior Hamas leader

The Hamas leader was killed in a bombing blamed on Israel by both the Palestinian Islamist movement and Iran, who have vowed revenge, fueling fears that the war in Gaza spreads to the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the new Iranian president, Masud Pezeshkian, He said in a statement that “The Zionists will soon see the consequences of their terrorist and cowardly act.”

Israel declined to comment on the attack, which came after the Israeli military shelled a suburb of Lebanon’s capital on Tuesday, killing Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr.

The deaths of the two senior figures from these anti-Israeli movements have raised fears that the war in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s October 7 attack in southern Israel, could spiral into a broader conflict in the Middle East.

“The brother, the leader, the mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the movement, was killed in a Zionist attack at his residence in Tehran”the Palestinian movement said in a statement.

A member of Hamas’s political bureau, Musa Abu Marzuk, He said Haniyeh’s death “will not go unpunished.” Haniyeh, 61, who lived in exile between Turkey and Qatar, was in Iran to attend Pezeshkian’s inauguration ceremony.

Iran has declared three days of official mourning and an “official and public” funeral ceremony will be held in Tehran on Thursday before the leader’s body is transferred to the Qatari capital Doha, where he will be buried on Friday, Hamas said.

The UN Security Council was due to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon following Haniyeh’s death, at Iran’s request.
