President Luis Lacalle Pou again questioned the development of the elections in Venezuela and pointed directly at the results released by Nicolas Maduro and he said: “If you don’t show the documents, it’s obvious that something strange is going on.”
Although Maduro promised hours ago that he would “hand over 100% of the records,” Lacalle Pou said that “what is happening in the Caribbean country is indefensible” and questioned the possible arrest of opposition leaders.
“We are not talking about someone who has a democratic background,” said the Uruguayan president when referring to his Venezuelan counterpart during a press conference in Rocha.
Lacalle Pou clarified that diplomatic relations were not broken
Lacalle Pou clarified that diplomatic relations with Venezuela were not broken, beyond the departure of the ambassador Silvana Montes de Oca from that country by decision of the Maduro government.
He also pointed out the escalation of violence denounced by opposition leaders such as Maria Corina Machado and the presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, pointing out that the Venezuelan leader “resorts to aggression.”
“It’s incredible how power can blind someone so much. Do you want to be in government, even if it harms your people?” the president asked, and assured that “it is assumed that whoever wants to be president will have one ideology or another, but wants to do good for his people.”
Maduro “has impoverished his country,” giving way to the migration of citizens to countries in the region. “People have left Venezuela and they are not doing well, someone cannot be so blinded by power,” he insisted.
For all this, Lacalle Pou asked for “firmness” from the international community. “Pressure is very important for Venezuela to recover its democracy”, He said: “Fortunately, some countries said so at the beginning. Others, which are a little more important, are getting closer. Even international organizations called to monitor the elections are saying that the result was not.”
