President Luis Lacalle Pou broke the silence on the scandal of National Party in Artigas, which led to the departure of Pablo Caram of the Intendancy, stating that “what is wrong, is wrong.”

Lacalle Pou referred to the case of the extra hours when asked during a press conference in Rocha and defended himself against criticism for not having spoken out earlier. “I have been president for four and a half years and I have never spoken about party politics,” he warned.

In this regard, the president said: “It’s not that I’m now taking off my rope with my hoof, I never spoke because I am the president of all the “Uruguayans”. However, he condemned the actions of Caram and the former deputy Valentina Dos Santos: “I will not stop answering, but not from a partisan point of view. Simply, what is wrong is wrong, regardless of the party.”

What did Lacalle Pou say about the impact on the National Party?

When asked about a possible impact of the scandal on the National Party, after a survey was released where the space lost ground in the face of the elections 2024, He responded elliptically: “On March 2 (2025) we will meet here and talk about politics.”

The PN candidate who did speak out hours ago about the episode was Alvaro Delgado. Asked about the lower number of votes expected in October, he warned: “I think it has to do with some other noises that there were, such as possibly the Artigas issue.”

“Some points that dropped went to undecided at first, which is the previous stage,” Delgado pointed out and clarified that “now the campaign begins and people come closer to making the decision about the future of the Uruguay”.

It is worth remembering that Caram resigned as Mayor of Artigas and was expelled from the PN after being sentenced to 14 months in prison on probation for “failure of a public official to report irregularities” related to the payment of overtime.
